Sin City

So it turns out that you can, for free, take the inter-island ferry between all the San Juan Islands that the ferry serves (which is four) (which is not all the San Juan Islands that there are) (which is a hundred and seventy-two).

You do, as it turns out, go past some of the islands that the ferry does not serve on your way to the ones that it does serve.

Which is to say that we took the ferry today to Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island its own self. Friday Harbor is the biggest city in the San Juans, and is, for some ENTIRELY MYSTERIOUS REASON, known as Sin City.

All we did was spend money, and eat, and drink. I have NO IDEA what they could be talking about.

After a scrumptious lunch, we immediately fell into a used bookstore called Serendipity.

Where we bought a few things.

Then we found an antique store, and a gorgeous Murano glass piece for Mark, and lovely grapefruit spoons for me:

A friend told us about a great thrift store, where Mark found galoshes, and I found pants, plus the most MARVELOUS craft book from 1973 (I’ve been interested to learn tatting):

After I’ve got tatting down, I can learn to make hats!

We finished the day with libations by the ferry landing.
Sin City Happy Hour

Sinful, sinful, from start to finish. We almost missed getting off the ferry at Orcas, we were so distracted by our delightful purchases. (And that would have sucked, as it was the last ferry of the day.) But we made it home, to an inn which had gotten VERY VERY COLD in our absence.

And there is still so much to do, but a day off was very nice. (I don’t know WHEN I’m going to find the time to learn tatting, but at least I have a book now!)
