May I suggest you take a look at Our Lady of the Islands, collaboratively written with the late Jay Lake?
It is a second-world fantasy novel featuring two middle-aged women protagonists. Though it’s set in an unexplored corner of Jay’s Green universe, you don’t need to be familiar with any of Jay’s writing to read and enjoy this.
Our Lady has received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Library Journal, and was named one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of 2014.
It is also one of Jay’s last novels; he died last June.
