Not Writing, Day 8

Apparently what I do when I am not writing is: think about writing, talk about writing, hang out with people who are writing, go to bookstores which are filled with writing, and attend events where writers read their work and/or talk about writing. Oh and blog a lot.

Well, it’s a nice change of pace anyway! 🙂

This morning, Jay and I went for our usual Buena Vista hill walk, and (yes!) talked about writing. Specifically, a random conversation about language (Cantonese vs. Mandarin) led to a detailed conversation about the language in the world of Our Lady of the Islands…which led to much noodling about trade, history, culture, etc. of the backstory of that world…which led to lots of brainstorming and figuring out of the motivations and problems of one of the main secondary characters, who had been left rather thinly fleshed out in my draft. (Well it was a FIRST draft…)

I am SO EXCITED, I almost wanted to grab the story back from him and work on those pieces myself. As it was, I made him write it all down the moment we got back to the nest, even though he’s Jay and he doesn’t need to. (But he did, to make me happy.) Besides, he’ll do it so much better than me–world-building is his great strength. If there’s character and relationship stuff that needs adding, I can do those bits.

Actually, heh-heh, there was a bit of “relationship stuff” that I’d thought would go into the book but never quite made it in. Wink wink nudge nudge. We also discussed where that might go. Maybe he’ll let me write that scene at least…(’cause if he wrote it, it would likely involve dwarfs, and nobody wants that.)
