Thursday Notes: #16
The Novel Continues

Behold my shiny progress tracker, with stickers all the way to 25,000 words! Woohoo! “Halfway there,” though this novel is no way half-finished.

For my non-writer friends, to whom 25,000 words may sound like a lot: It’s not, really. I mean, it’s not nothing–my document file currently stands at 80 double-spaced pages–but, for comparison: the first two books in the series are around 60,000 words each, and as you know, they’re kind of short novels. The Queen and The Tower is 100,000 words. Our Lady of the Islands is 175,000 words. Mark’s The Book of Joby clocks in at an impressive 250,000.

Still, I’m pleased, and this has already been so much fun. The story is taking off in entirely different directions than I’d planned, and plot threads are weaving together as though a smart author had worked it all out in advance. (Which, I promise, she didn’t.) I’m mostly keeping a 3,000 word a day pace, which will allow for time off for Thanksgiving. I should still make my 50K-at-least-by-November-30 goal.

Which will be great, because I’ll want December (and January) for writing A Sword in The Sun: the sequel to Queen & Tower.

One more thing, before I get back to writing: the audiobook of Orcas Intruder is live! Here’s the regular link; and hey, if you’re not already a member of Audible, the narrator and I get a “bonus” payout if you sign up and use this link.

That’s it for this week! Back to the word mines.
