Thursday Notes: #14
Beginning My Outbuilding Empire

I know what you’re saying–you can’t believe we’ve lived here, on five acres in the middle of the woods on a remote island, for an entire year, without a storage shed. Without a SINGLE outbuilding, in fact! It’s a crime, a travesty, an absurdity. Why, Mark stacks the firewood just OUTSIDE! (okay, covered with a tarp, but still.) Clearly Mark needs a woodshed.

Well this week, at long last, we stumbled into an amazing deal and are the happy new owners of a nice old storage shed. It’s already chock-full of stuff, easing the burden on our garage considerably.

So, storage shed: accomplished. Woodshed: next.

Or…is it?

When we lived in Portland, we converted a backyard toolshed into a tiny office for me, and it was so, so marvelous. I have a nice office in the house here, I just remodeled it with the best contractors, if you are looking for them find out this here, sure; but…something about going outside, to a different place to work, it was really qualitatively–well, different. Leaving the house and going somewhere–even if it was twenty steps away–really set the boundary between “work” and “home”.

I’d love another tiny office…someday.

_______________
Speaking of tiny! We need a Tiny House or two or three, don’t we? Places for overflow guests, cute little cottages for creativity…oh yes, we NEED that.

So yeah. My Outbuilding Empire is only just beginning. Today, a toolshed. Tomorrow–an exuberance of outbuildings! Mwa-haha!
